Silicone Makes A Great Bakeware Material

Silicone bakeware has grown tremendously in popularity over the past several years. Silicone makes an excellent material for working with heat. It is flexible so it is easy to collapse it for storage. Some manufactures are making truly collapsible bakeware like colanders, bowls and measuring cups which fold down into themselves. Silicone also is very inert and there for is not a health concern and lastly it is inexpensive and dishwasher safe.

Silicone spatulas are really nice since they are very flexible and don’t tend to harden over time. You can also use them in high heat mixtures like making candy or toffee. They don’t cost a bundle and last a long time.

Colanders made from silicone and made to collapse into themselves are a great idea for those with storage problems. A standard colander has always been a storage nuisance especially if you keep more than one around the kitchen. The silicone ones are generally dishwasher safe and store virtually flat so you do save a ton of room.

Bakeware made from silicone comes in many other shapes and sizes including muffin pans, cake pans, bread pans to name just a few. There are a couple of drawbacks when using silicone for baking. Being flexible has its pluses but a rigid metal pan has its place as well. For instance, when removing a layer cake from the oven while the mixture is still very soft and delicate can be quite a skill. You can not just grab the side of the pan with one hand and leverage it level. It will flop to one side and your cake may actually fall out of the pan. Flipping it is also more difficult and requires some re-learning. All in all silicone bakeware is great but does have its glitches too.
