Everything cooking (and sometimes more...), from a non-professional point of view
Cooking can be a very satisfying. I believe everyone should cook in some way, shape or form. There is something about preparing food and creating things to eat that is very architypical. I guess that makes sense in a way since we have been cooking for thousands of years... When I say cooking I mean more than just following recipes.
Don't get me wrong, recipes are good but they are not really cooking in the true sense. In order to really cook you need to create, or as many would say, "make it up as you go". This of course can go from one extreme to the other so as usual some balance is needed. If all you ever do is follow recipes to the letter, then you are really just, well... following recipes to the letter. -something a machine could do.
On the other hand if every time you cook, you make an entirely new type of dish with strange and exotic ingredients and then heat it using strange methods like strapping to an engine block, then there is little structure and chances are taste and enjoyment is out the window too.
I found that after some time following recipes I had the urge to create and try new things. It took me a number of years to get to this point but I would recommend everyone get to the 'experimental' point as quickly as possible. Make yor OWN recipes, or at least variations of ones you know and find. This will make cooking fun and turn it into a creative experience. It will also cause you to create some disasters and some not so desirable dishes, but this is the only way to learn. Making mistakes is great!
So my 'recipe' for cooking is: 1 part structure and 1 part creativity with a touch of daring.
-I'm not a chef and I'm certainly not new.
